WTF, all my data disappeared

Losing your data is unacceptable, of course. We are very sorry for the inconvenience.

Bad news

This is an obscure bug. The most likely explanation is that the browser deletes its own data when it crosses a threshold of how much hard drive space it’s allowed to occupy. User reports validate low free hard drive space commonality.

So far, we were unable to reproduce this problem in a test environment, and it seems the mechanism is likely triggered by a browser update. Other local-first extensions are experiencing the same problem, and even Chromium developers aren’t entirely sure about how the mechanism decides if an IndexDB should be granted eviction exemption or not. As such, it’s out of our control for the time being.

With v1.8.4, we shipped an update. The new version obtains the unlimitedStorage permission which also grants exemption from data eviction. In theory it should be 100%, in practice we don't know, yet.

Good news

Not all is lost. In most cases, your data can be recovered.

Here’s how to fix the problem:

  1. Free hard drive space by emptying the bin, deleting downloads, unused apps, temporary files, and other stuff you no longer need [Tips: PC | Mac] — without enough free hard drive space, the problem will just repeat itself
  2. Reboot the browser, then the system to see if the data re-emerges; it not...
  3. Recover application data by importing bookmarks carbon copy, or by recovering the database file

We’re actively working on a solution that will put this problem to and end.

Hopefully, you’ll successfully rectify the situation with workarounds described above.
